Japanese Mirror

$825

This Late Meiji era Japanese Wall Mirror is in near-perfect condition and is a graceful evocation of the restrained, some would even say austere, elegance that was a hallmark of the later Meiji.

What makes this piece exceptionally appealing is the polished metal-look wood framing, which renders it more contemporary in feeling than the classic black lacquer with gilding that was typical of the time. From a contemporary perspective - the simple beveling and discreet double notched corners are its only nod to the earlier Meiji, where western-inspired, elaborate animal, dragon and plant stylized imagery prevailed. This subtlest of decoration - show how Japanese taste soon returned to their more thoughtful, wabi-nuanced forms of design.
